"All Frock and No Knickers"!

Things went really well for David and Chris they shared good fortune and some good luck. In 1980 they sold their shop in Disley for a handsome profit and rented a 'glamorous emporium' in Wilmslow, the Mayfair of Cheshire. Many people warned them that the venture was risky, claiming that Wilmslow was 'all frock and no knickers' . Sadly business was never good and three years later the two decided to dissolve the partnership, but they remained the best of friends.

Next, David considered opening his own shop in Manchester, but because this time he would be incurring even higher overheads he asked a faithful customer from the Wilmslow shop to take a silent interest in the venture. The business thrived for some years, but as David remarks 'this antiques business is not all go, go go' and in 1991 with another recession looming they decided to shut up shop.

A Man For All Seasons

David decided to concentrate on selling antiques at prestigious fairs. He no longer runs a premises but takes stands at Olympia and other major antiques fairs three or four times a year. He deals in 18th and 19th century furniture and extraordinary works of art.
In the late nineteen nineties a chance meeting with a TV producer at a barbecue lead to his first TV appearance, a two part documentary for the BBC made about him and his preparation for
a show at Olympia. He now presents and appears on various shows among them the highly successful Bargain Hunt, which is filmed in the winter and summer and airs in the spring and autumn. He has taken Bargain Hunt to even greater heights of success with it's prime time editions which have bagged 7.5 million viewers on BBC1.

He is the author of two excellent books on antique buying and bargain hunting. He has written and performed a one man theatre show, 'The Bargain Hunter', an evening of insight into the world of antiques. Described as 'your chance to discover the secrets of buying and selling for profit and pleasure. And gives talks on antiques at various antique fairs up and down the country. For those of you unable to catch David live he has a video/dvd 'Cheap as Chips' to be released in November 2002 which will reach an even wider audience, packed full of his invaluable tips on buying and collecting and of the antique trade.
David has made Bargain Hunt the jewel of daytime TV, and ratings consistently beat the opposition hands down. Fans of the show got behind David and voted Bargain Hunt 'Most Popular Daytime Programme' in the prestigious National Television Awards in October 2002. Ironically in the press conference which followed the award ceremony David announced his decision to step down from presenting the daytime edition of Bargain Hunt to enable him to concentrate on the prime time shows.

He's clearly not a man to sit and watch the grass grow. Who knows what he'll be up to next!!!
Whatever it is I hope you join me in wishing him every continued success.
