New Beginnings

When David Dickinson met Lorne Lesley he was working in the textile industry, but he was ready for a change of career and gave up his job to become Lorne's manager. Together they traveled the world. It was during this time that David's interest in antiques began to flourish. The cabaret bookings took them to exotic locations all around the world and as Lorne's shows wouldn't start until late in the evening they had all day together to go out shopping and exploring the towns.

Shop Talk

He learned a lot just looking around shops and market stalls and by always asking lots of questions. Getting his 'eye in' the world of antiques. We all know David Dickinson to be a most charming and witty man, and he reckons that dealers love to be charmed. That if you are polite, and ask before hauling the merchandise about that traders will be happy to answer all your questions and give you as much information about a piece as they can. Spotting a bargain is not a question of luck but the application of acquired knowledge and experience.

A Partnership of Equals

In the nineteen seventies he opened an antiques shop with his boyhood friend Chris Haworth. The idea to set up an antiques business came about when, David, Chris and their respective wives were sharing time together. Chris enjoyed collecting and David had already started buying and selling antiques. It was a big step but with their wives blessing they decided to give it a go.

David says 'Chris's character complemented mine; we were two sides of one coin.' David was the flamboyant, outgoing side while Chris was the more cautious one. They bought a little shop in the centre of Disley, a region of Manchester. Lorne and Chris's wife even helped with 'cleaning and dusting'!
